What Does “Veritas” Mean?

Veritas Counseling & Consultation was founded in 2018 with the mission to provide support and evidence-based effective treatments to our clients through the compassionate work of expert clinicians.

The Dominican Order, formally known as the Order of Preachers, is a mendicant order of the Catholic Church founded in France by the Spanish priest Saint Dominic. Dominicans have a few mottos that encapsulate their purpose and mission, and one that is frequently cited is veritas, which is Latin for “truth.” We believe the Dominican motto “to contemplate truth and to share this contemplation with others” reflects our how we approach our business model and clinical counseling work, as the process of counseling is grounded in self-reflection, insight, and discovery.

Spirituality, Religion, & Counseling

Simply put, the faith of the client and the faith of the counselor must be respected, and this applies equally to any faith background. Is not a counselor’s job to change anyone else’s belief system or way of thinking. Also, a counselor does not have share the client’s belief system (although they very well may, and there is strength in that too), but it does mean they should be able to respect their clients and meet their needs to the best of their abilities. It is entirely possible for clients and counselors who do not share a similar faith to work together effectively.

Licensed counselors are bound by the ACA Code of Ethics which states:

“A.4.b. Personal Values Counselors are aware of—and avoid imposing—their own values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. Counselors respect the diversity of clients, trainees, and research participants and seek training in areas in which they are at risk of imposing their values onto clients, especially when the counselor’s values are inconsistent with the client’s goals or are discriminatory in nature.”

Our Philosophy of Counseling

The client-counselor relationship provides a safe and non-judgmental space for honest exploration of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that can be changed if desired and ultimately better understood. Through sharing, listening, experimentation, and feedback, clients and counselors work together to address and overcome struggles that are common to the human experience.

We also believe that no two people have the same history, situation, resources, personalities, and skills. As such, we work to personalize and tailor the support and treatment modalities for each person, taking into account their unique needs. In addition, our counseling services are integrative, holistic, and are appropriately matched to the client’s counseling goals.
